Of all vitamins and minerals, the most studied is Vitamin C. One of the first
"clinical" findings of its kind in history was that Vitamin C and foods that
contained it prevented scurvy among sailors on long ocean voyages.

More recently, Vitamin C has been shown to have many positive effects on
health and well-being. These include helping to prevent some kinds of
cancers, lessening the duration and severity of colds, speeding wound healing,
and helping to overcome some types of male infertility.

Deficiencies in Vitamin C are the cause of scurvy. Symptoms of scurvy
include tender, bleeding gums, bleeding under the skin and easy bruising, and
extreme weakness.

The National Research Council recommends 60 milligrams of Vitamin C
daily. Although Vitamin C has not been shown to be toxic, very large doses
can cause stomach upset, cramps and diarrhea. Also, rapidly discontinuing
very large dose supplements of Vitamin C can cause scurvy. The body
adjusts to such large doses in part by not storing as much Vitamin C; the rapid
return to a normal dose can result in an effective "shortage". Megadoses
should be reduced gradually.
