Vitamin B1 / Thiamin

Vitamin B1, also known as thiamin, is an essential element to the human body.
Is is a factor in metabolic reactions, the functioning of the heart and nervous
system, the maintenence of muscle, and the conversion of blood sugar into
energy.

Deficiencies in thiamin can cause mental confusion, vision problems,
decreased sensation to the hands and feet, and heart problems. Extreme
deficiencies in this vitamin can cause heart failure. Mild thiamin deficiencies are
common, especially in people who drink alcohol, which interferes with
intestinal absorption of the vitamin.

Thiamin is found in all plant and animal products. Whole grain foods, seafood,
and beans are especially good sources.

The U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance of thiamin is 1.2 to 1.5 milligrams
for men, 1.0 to 5.0 milligrams for women, and 1.4 to 5.5 milligrams for
pregnant women or nursing mothers. Thiamin has not been found to have any
toxic effects, even in doses far above the USRDA.
