Silicon is most commonly known for its use in semiconductors and breast
implants. After oxygen, it is the most abundant element in the earth's crust.
Currently, little is known about the biological effects of silicon, although it is
believed to be essential for humans. Its most popular biological use, at this
time, is supplementation to increase the strength of hair, skin, and nails.

Food sources include vegetables, whole grains and seafood. There is
currently no Recommended Dietary Allowance, but toxicity can occur if
inhaled.
