Iodine, commonly found in iodized table salt, is closely linked to the thyroid.
Hypothyroidism symptoms such as chronic fatigue, dry skin, apathy, weight
gain, and enlargement of the thyroid may be mimicked by an iodine
deficiency, or ironically, iodine overdose.

Sufficient levels of iodine may help protect against toxic effects from
radioactive materials, relieve symptoms of fibrocystic breasts and loosen up
mucus in breathing tubes. Many hikers and campers carry iodine tablets to
purify water for drinking.

Iodine-rich foods are found primarily in the ocean and include seaweed, fish,
shrimp, lobster, clams and oysters. Many table salts also contain iodine. The
Recommended Dietary Allowance is 150mg daily. Supplements need to be
taken primarily for those who limit salt intake and don't eat seafood.
