Fluorine is not currently rated as an essential trace element, although electrically charged fluorine, known as fluoride, is the primary agent in the prevention of tooth decay. In fact, much of the U.S. water supply has been supplemented with fluoride after research showed its impressive effects on children's dental health. As part of its role in skeletal and dental formation, fluoride is accredited with protecting against and treating osteoporosis. Complemented by calcium, fluoride stimulates new bone growth, making bones stronger. Intake of fluoride can be toxic at very high levels. Since most drinking water is supplemented with fluoride, extra need not be taken. For those who buy their water and, hence, may not ingest as much fluoride, supplements are available through doctors and dentists. Some good food sources of fluoride include seafood and other animal meat, and tea.
