Vitamin A is found in two forms, each with different characterstics.
Preformed Vitamin A is Vitamin A in the form in which it is used by the
human body. Provitamin A is made up of elements that the human body
converts to Vitamin A after ingestion. The most well-known form of
Provitamin A is beta-carotene.

Vitamin A is linked to many positive health factors. These include higher
immune system function, faster wound healing, lower rates of cancer, and
better skin condition. However, preformed Vitamin A is highly toxic in large
doses. It can cause nausea, hair loss, blurred vision, skin sores and
headaches, as well as birth defects when taken by pregnant women.
Beta-carotene seems to provide all the benefits of preformed Vitamin A
without the toxicity.

Preformed Vitamin A in found in animal products. Fish oils and liver are the
most abundant sources of preformed Vitamin A. Beta-carotene is found in
vegetable products, including broccoli, spinach, lettuce, cantaloupe and
tomatoes. Carrots and sweet potatoes are extremely rich in beta-carotene.

The U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance of Vitamin A is 5,000 IU's.
